The Theological Studies: Christian Education Leadership major at Concordia University Irvine is for students who are interested in a full-time church ministry role such as Director of Christian Education (DCE), 青年 group leader, camp director, or serving as a missionary nationally or internationally. You will have the opportunity to be mentored in your area of study 和 gain first-h和 experience through extensive fieldwork as you serve in a variety of local churches.

Concordia’s Christian Education Leadership program resides in 基督学院, which ensures a strong 神学 foundation 和 courses that are taught through the lens of 家庭 ministry 和 cross-generational ministry.

Students connect with local churches to observe 和 engage with a variety of ministry contexts 和 experiences. They are assigned to a local church 和 participate under the supervision of a ministry mentor. Students practice 和 grow in their leadership skills in order to become better prepared for lifelong service in the church.

Curriculum

From its founding, Concordia University’s 基督学院 has equipped students for full-time ministry in the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS). Guided by the Great Commission, you will be shaped as citizens prepared to serve God’s world 和 proclaim God’s word. Students who desire to be a Director of Christian Education (DCE) in the LCMS must also complete the DCE minor 和基督学院 requirements.

Sample Christian Education Leadership Courses

CED 201: Introduction to Christian Education: Theory 和 Practice

Students will be introduced to the biblical, 神学, 和 historical foundations of Christian education within the church in this course as they meet 和 observe Christian education practitioners; create a philosophy of ministry; begin a professional portfolio; 和 explore their personal interests, 天赋, 和 skills in relation to those needed for success in Christian education leadership. Students will also determine their commitment to The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Director of Christian Education program. Course requirement: Completion of fingerprint clearance procedures including payment of appropriate fees.

CED 202: Church Leadership 和 Administration

In this course students will explore biblical principles 和 current practices of leaders 和 managers: envisioning, 组织, 招聘, 培训, 和 supervision of volunteers, 预算, 宣传, 和 evaluating with special emphasis upon the application of these functions to church 和 parachurch leadership 和 administration. Learning culminates in a strategic ministry plan used within students' fieldwork congregations. Prerequisite: Fingerprint clearance or consent of 基督学院's Office of Church Vocations.

CED 350: Learning Across the Life Span

This course will present the major concepts, theories 和 applications related to both the typical 和 atypical spiritual, 道德, 认知, 社会, 和 emotional development across the lifespan in the context of local church ministry. Knowledge gained in this course lays a foundation for leadership of children's, 家庭, 青年, 成人, 和 special needs ministry.

This course will examine the dynamics of 家庭 interaction from a systems perspective. An underst和ing of 家庭 systems theory will be applied to the historical, 社会学, 神学, 和 biblical contexts of 家庭 life 和 the church. Topics will include 家庭 formation, the process of 家庭 life, 家族病史, 非家庭, 危机评估.

PSY 466: Principles of Counseling

This foundation course will provide an underst和ing of the content 和 process of counseling including basic skills, 法律和道德问题, 危机干预, 文化敏感性, 如何以及何时提及, control-mastery理论, 和 the integration of psychology 和 theology.

You will find there is a strong sense of community 和 purpose among our students. Our location within Southern California exposes you to a rich ethnic diversity that helps prepare you to minister to a broad range of people.

You can combine your degree with a related minor or church work program. You may also transition directly into one of our ministry, post-baccalaureate, or graduate programs.

Extracurricular Activities

Christian Education Leadership majors have competed in the President’s 学术展示和 the President’s 大使命展示. They participate in a variety of Concordia University Irvine study abroad programs. They also have the opportunity to help plan a mission trip to Mexico as well as participate in other domestic 和 international mission trips. 3分的学生.5 GPA or higher in Religious Studies 和/or Theology may join Concordia’s Theta Alpha Kappa chapter, a national honor society for theology.

Professor Rebecca Duport ‘98 has served the LCMS as a Director of Christian Education (DCE) throughout the country (Idaho, 肯塔基州, 阿肯色州, Florida) in life-span education roles working with Children, 青年, 家庭, 和老年人. She cherishes the relationships that God has allowed her the privilege to be a part of as a full-time DCE in His church for 16 years before returning to her alma mater, Concordia University Irvine, 2014年担任教授.
